Guest Speaker

David Simons, Citizens' Climate Lobby

Sue introduced David, stating that when she realized she wanted to make an impact on climate change and the environment rather than just talk about it, she found Citizens' Climate Lobby. CCL is a volunteer organization that was founded by a Rotarian, and there are local chapters across the country.

David went on to explain what is happening globally, and how the greenhouse effect works: High levels of carbon dioxide trap heat in our atmosphere. 93% of the affect is on the oceans, and 7% on our land. This will result in a very serious impact of a 3 degree C increase by the year 2300. British Columbia has implemented this solution, and it is expanding through Canada.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Carbon pollution has always been a hot topic when it comes to environmental responsibility, especially when you’re trying to make positive choices that won’t have damaging long term consequences on the planet. Many people wrongly assume that transport is the only way they can actively influence the lowering of carbon emissions, and yes it’s a huge part, but there are other easy ways to improve your carbon footprint in other areas of your life. Here are some simple changes you can make for the better:

Transport choices

Try public transport, planning your shopping trips out in advance so that you avoid unnecessary trips, or carpooling with colleagues who live near you so that you reduce your number of journeys slowly over time. If you simply can’t avoid car journeys alone, then make your car as efficient as possible so that your journeys aren’t causing any unnecessary carbon emissions.

Say no to food waste

Throwing away food waste is a terrible thing to admit, so take action today and make the promise that this will be the last week you waste any of it. Plan your meals out in advance so you only buy what you need, actively think about portion sizes so that no food is wasted at the end of a meal, and what you can’t use, freeze to save it for another day.

Making your home more eco-friendly

Insulating your home to prevent heat loss will help improve your carbon footprint, as will making more efficient use of natural elements like solar power so that you’re not relying as heavily on electricity and fossil fuels. Recycling at home is obviously essential, so take the time to so.
