Stay Safe in the Heat

Millions of Americans have experienced brutal temperatures  lately. That heat is more than just uncomfortable. It could also prove to be deadly.

When our bodies are exposed to extreme temperatures, we become more susceptible to exhaustion and heat stroke. There are also long-term consequences that can lead to disease.

Increased body temperature can cause heavy sweating, clammy skin, dehydration, tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea, cramps, and a quick, weak pulse.

According to Center for Climate Change and Health, extreme heat causes more deaths than any other type of natural disaster, estimated at 1,300 per year.

TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Stay hydrated with plenty of water—even if you're not thirsty. Don't drink alcohol, sugary soda or drinks, or other caffeinated beverages, as they will only make dehydration worse. Eat small meals and eat more often. Use sunscreen and wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and a hat made of breathable material.
